Artificial Intelligence Guidance from Library and Knowledge Services Staff

Monday, 13 October, 2025

NES Knowledge Services and NHS Scotland Library and Knowledge Services have developed new guidance on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI), specifically designed for library and knowledge services staff working within NHS Scotland boards.

This guidance offers practical, context-specific advice, with a strong focus on copyright, ethics, and information literacy. It is not intended as general advice for the wider health and social care sector, but may be of interest to others and hopes to add to the growing body of guidance in this area.

Two key points:

  • Your NHS Librarians are experts in copyright and information literacy. They are available to help you decide whether to use AI tools and what to do with the information it gives you: contact your local library service
  • Staff must not upload copyrighted material, including licensed full-text journal articles, into generative AI tools such as Copilot Chat. Further guidance is available on our dedicated learning site: AI and copyright

NES has approved the guidance and it is hosted on The Knowledge Network, the national digital library for health and social care in Scotland. It will be reviewed every three months to ensure it remains up-to-date with evolving legal and governance positions. The working group behind the guidance will continue to meet regularly during the first year to monitor developments and incorporate feedback.
