The Scottish Physiotherapist Amputee Research Group (SPARG) comprises every senior physiotherapist in Scotland with a clinical responsibility for amputee rehabilitation. SPARG has been meeting as a clinical interest/research group for 18 years and over this time has developed a unique national database of demographic, rehabilitation milestone and outcome data for all new lower limb amputees in Scotland. (protocols available)
Data is collected using a Data Summary Form (DSF) which is regularly updated to enable precise and relevant information collection. This information is now entered onto a web based database which allows local analysis and comparisons with national data. A report on the national data is published each year and is available electronically. To receive a copy please make contact through the website 'contact' portal or email one of the contacts listed below. A public report is also available.
SPARG has been successful in securing funding to support the development of the database and numerous research projects.
- Validation of the Functional Co-morbidities Index (FCI)
- 'How do models of care in Scotland impact on the use of the PPAM aid in Scotland?': a collaborative project with NHS GGC, Caledonian University and SPARG, funded by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.
- WestMARC Knee Guide for the Prosthetic MDT 2017 - with new chapter on Microprocessor knees (see in 'useful links' below).
- Evidence Based Clinical Guidelines for physiotherapy management of intermittent claudication.
- The Transfemoral Fitting Predictor (TFP)
- Clinical Guidelines for the use of the PPAM aid
- Core Physiotherapy Competency: 'care of the remaining foot'

Update April 2019
Welcome to our website.
Our next meetings are on the 25th of April and 24th October 2019 (see 'meetings' section for more details). Thank you to everyone who came and contributed to our June 2018 Conference. It was an excellent day, productive and informative as ever. The presentations have been posted (see 'conferences' section for more details).
The 2015 Annual report was published last year and 2016 Report will be discussed and confirmed at our meeting in a couple of weeks. Community members can download the full 2015 Report from this site and non-members can request a full copy or download the public version. Please note that the data collection project could not continue without the commitment and hard work of all the individual SPARG members. To all concerned a huge thank you.
