Changing Lives
Welcome to Changing Lives
Welcome to the Changing Lives Microsite. This site has been set up as an archive for all products and information from the Scottish Government's Changing Lives change programme for social work services in Scotland, based on the 21st century review of social work.
This site supercedes the Social Work Scotland website, that was set up by the Scottish Government in 2006 to enable users to access a wide range of information about Changing Lives, and closed on 30 November 2009.
This site gives you access to the majority of documents and publications relating to Changing Lives, including the Change Programmes, Core Products and Local Practitioner Forums.
The Changing Lives team continue to work with a wide range of individuals, organisations and groups with an interest in social work services. This includes service users and carers, local authorities, voluntary and private organisations, umbrella and partner organisations (including health, education and justice services), universities and colleges and other Scottish Government departments.
Please note that the information provided in the attached reports and documents is archived material and as such any contact details may now be out of date.
Many of the documents and publications are available in the attached Resource Library. If you cannot find the document you want, please try searching the wider SSKS portal eLibrary or IRISS Learning Exchange

Changing Lives Branding
Background
The three key messages from the 21st Century Social Work Review were:
- Doing more of the same won't work. Increasing demand, greater complexity and rising expectations mean that the current situation is not sustainable
- Social work services don't have all the answers. they need to work closely with other universal providers in all sectors to find new ways to design and deliver services across the public sector
- Social worker's skills are highly valued and increasingly relevant to the changing needs of society. Yet we are far from making the best use of these skills
Changing Lives, the response to the Review, made clear the need for transformational change of social work services if they were to be able to cope with future demand and requirements, and provided a platform and direction for improvement.
The aspiration for Changing Lives is improving outcomes for individuals, families and communities and work remains focussed on two key areas:
- Developing the capacity to deliver personalised services;
- Building a confident, competent and valued workforce
Transformation of social work services to better meet people's needs requires major cultural change, as well as visionary leadership at national and local levels. It will continue to need concerted effort, collaborative working and for every one of us to play our part, and be willing to challenge and to be challenged to ensure delivery of the services needed for the 21st century.
